Statement

In response to the recent clamors for “Taiwan independence” separatist rhetoric by the so-called “Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei Darussalam” (TECO), as well as its misconducts incompatible with its nature, which have seriously misled the public and caused egregious impact, in order to clear up confusion and misunderstandings, as well as to discard the lies and reveal the truth, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China hereby issues the following statement:

For quite some time, the so-called TECO has disregarded the fact solidly rooted in history and the law that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China, spreading and hyping up falsehoods such as “the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other”, distorting United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758, and denying facts with false narratives against the just acts of the international community in upholding the one-China principle, including recently multiple countries refusing to issue flight permits for the visit of Taiwan region’s leader, as well as the World Health Assembly rejecting the so-called proposal concerning Taiwan for 10 consecutive years. Worse still, targeting the sabda of His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, that Brunei is firmly committed to the one-China policy, which was reaffirmed by His Royal Highness during the recent visit to China, the so-called TECO blatantly peddled separatist rhetoric for “Taiwan independence”, such as “Taiwan has never been a part of the People’s Republic of China”, and challenged the Brunei government’s consistent policy and important high-level statements. The so-called TECO and its representative even proclaim themselves a “diplomatic mission” and an “envoy”, attempting to build connections with Brunei government and diplomatic missions, and engage in activities of strong political and diplomatic nature, including inviting some diplomatic envoys to Brunei to attend a documentary screening a few days ago. These clumsy actions go against the so-called TECO’s position as a civil institution registered in Brunei, and have fully exposed its political agenda and separatist nature of “Taiwan independence”.

The Embassy reiterates that the one-China principle is a basic norm in international relations and a prevailing consensus in the international community. Taiwan has never been a state. It is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China. Recently, leaders of many countries reiterated the one-China policy on the Taiwan question during their visits to China. The visit of the Taiwan region’s leader was boycotted by many countries, and the World Health Assembly once again rejected the so-called proposal concerning Taiwan. Brunei side, as well as the diplomatic missions in Brunei which attended the so-called TECO’s functions, confirmed to the Embassy that their governments adhere to the one-China policy, and that the relevant envoys’ perceptions of the Taiwan question strictly follow this principle. Facts fully demonstrate that the one-China principle is where global opinion trends, the arc of history bends, and what the greater national interests entail. No matter how the “Taiwan independence” forces distort facts and call white black, they cannot change the fact that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China, nor can they stop the historical trend towards China’s ultimate and inevitable reunification.

China appreciates Brunei’s position that that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China, and believes that people from all walks of life in Brunei and diplomatic missions in Brunei will continue to adhere to the one-China principle, resist the inappropriate remarks and activities of the so-called TECO, and firmly support the just cause of the Chinese people in opposing “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and striving for national reunification. The Embassy solemnly urges the so-called TECO to clearly face the reality, properly recognize its position, act as befits its status, and immediately cease all separatist acts for “Taiwan independence”. Otherwise, they will only reap what they sow and be forever condemned by history.
